A quick drive was all that was needed to leap frog 1S07 so here it is again north of Dalwhinnie. 02/06/90. 43048 was the rear power car of the up Highland Chieftain as they approach Kingussie, 43046 was leading. 02/06/90. Aviemore is the location of this sad sight of 47562 after suffering a traction motor fire. All was not lost though as Sir William Burrell was soon returned to traffic.

20Apr90. The first train to pass us that evening was a disappointment, at the time it was anyway, but on reflection perhaps not. The evening Queen Street - Arbroath was normally a loco and stock, sometimes two locos as one would be on test from Glasgow Works, but not this day. A Strathclyde PTE liveried Class 101 started our evening off for us. 20Apr90. The Scotrail liveried MkII and III's had started to disappear for refurbishment and were replaced with Inter-City red stripe coaches. Here an Aberdeen - Queen Street service heads south in the correct formation with the DBSO leading, and 47707 shoving. 20Apr90. An attempt at panning 47707 shoving its Aberdeen - Queen Street service. 20Apr90. The Scotrail blue stripe liveried 47461 at the head of an Inverness - Queen Street, caught between the vegitation. 20Apr90. Looking south the King's Cross - Inverness HST came into view as it made its way north, to far away for proper id though, sorry. 20Apr90. And the going away shot that these trains make so easy. 20Apr90. If I remember correctly a couple of heavywight 37 had just arrived in the area from Immingham, this is 37707 with a Speedlink (remember those?) feeder service from Perth to Grangemouth. 20Apr90. Caught on the hop here as 47708 heads north towards tThe Granite City with is 'shove' from Queen Street. 20Apr90. Ready for this northbound, even though I had been caught napping with 26041 heading north between the shove and this Queen Street - Inverness with 47642 at the business end. The sun was getting lower in the sky all the time and gives off a golden effect. 20Apr90. The shot was lined up for the loco to be shoving and this was the hastily recompossed shot of 47706 at the wrong end of the Aberdeen - Queen Street service. 20Apr90. 47640 powers an Inverness - Queen Street train through the rich Perthshire countryside as the evenings photographic entertainment drew to a close. 20Apr90. Having been caught out with 26041 working a Speedlink feeder from Grangemouth to Perth we were nearly caught again as it returned south light engine as we made our way back to the car. We were also caught by the waterballiff, who despite our cameras around our necks wanted to know what we were up to, had we been fishing? All was sorted out cheerfully and we were told that anytime we wanted to come back just to give him a wave. I wonder, nearly seventeen years later if he would remember?

]]> Fri Apr 20 1990 Vic Berry's Thornton Junction Outpost http://gallery72347.fotopic.net/c1182593.html During the early months of 1987 Vic Berry, the Leicester scrap merchant, disposed of some of his Scottish locomotive acquisitions in Thornton Yard. This was a short lived exercise due, I understand, to asbestos problems and some of the acquired locomotives had to be taken to his Humberstone Road yard in Leicester for disposal. Sunday 12 April 1987: During the early months of 1987 Vic Berry, the Leicester scrap merchant, disposed of some of his Scottish locomotive acquisitions in Thornton Yard. This was a short lived exercise due, I understand, to asbestos problems and some of the acquired locomotives had to be taken to his Humberstone Road yard in Leicester for disposal.

12Apr87. Not all the locomotives at Thornton that day were connected to Vic Berry's operations as the yard was still an active signing on and stabling point both for passenger and the local freight services. 20223/227 and 27026 wait for their next duties. 12Apr87. A closer look at 20223 complete with the 'Castle' emblem of Haymarket depot. 12Apr87. The opposite end of the 27026 20227/223 line up. 12Apr87. The line up of Vic Berry acquisitions waiting their fate, in order are 26019/13, 25058/318, 27016/27/29. 12Apr87. 26019 which last turned a wheel in traffic as long ago as February 1983 when it was placed in 'unserviceable' store at Haymarket. It reached Thornton after short spells stored at Craigentinny and Millerhill. Eventually cut up at Thornton in June its cabs still had a final journey to make though as they were transported to Leicester for final scrapping. 12Apr87. 26013 had been out of use even longer than sister '019. It went into store at Dundee way back in September 1982. It was moved to Dunfermline Townhill in 1983 and then again relocated to Thornton for continued storage in Dec84. It was then sent over to Glasgow Works, maybe for component recovery(?) in August 1986 but was returned to Thornton in April 87 after being sold to Vic Berry in Dec 86. This loco was not cut at Thornton however and made another journey, which took a week to complete, to Leicester and scrapping by July 1987. 12Apr87. 26013/19 had spent long periods out of use but they were short stays compaired to 25028 seen here. This loco was taken out of traffic unserviceable in Oct 1980! Originally stored at Millerhil until Sep81 it made a move over to Polmadie residing there until Feb83 when it made what should have been its 'final' journey to Glasgow Works for disposal. However Vic came along and bought the machine in Jan87 and it was moved to Thornton that month for scrapping. Change of heart yet again, 25028 made yet another 'final' move, this time it was for good though as after leaving Thornton on 03Jun it arrived in Vic Berry's yard on 09Jun and had disappeared by the 14th. 12Apr87. 27016 with all the tell tale marks of the fire of 24Mar83. This was a fatal fire as far as the loco was concerned as it never worked again being moved from Eastfield the short distance to Glasgow Works it remained there until Jan87 when it was towed to Thornton for scrapping. This never took place as 27016 left Thornton on 10Jun and staggered to Leicester with stop overs at Mossend, Carlisle New Yard and Basford Hall. Cut up in Leicester during Jul87. 12Apr87. 27027 another victim of the fires that seemed to plague the class. Placed in store at Inverness due to fire damage in July 82 it was reinstated two months later but only in an unserviceable state (?) before moving to Glasgow Works early 1983 where it remained until movement to Thornton in Jan 87. Cut up at Thornton with its cabs being sent to Leicester for disposal. 12Apr87. 27029 was next in line for the chop when this picture was taken, it had disappeared completely eight days later. 12Apr87. Three cabs from Class 27 victims almost certain that they were two from 27040 and one from 27021. 12Apr87. Vic Berry's lorry stands like a vulture over the remains of 27040. 12Apr87. A much happier scene from the visit to Thornton Yard was these two pairs of 20's waiting to take up their duties on the local frieght traffic the following morning. 221 was paired 201 and 225 had 222 as its partner. 12Apr87. 27051 is not yet the property of Vic Berry as it had not yet been withdrawn, although it never worked again, to my knowledge. It remain at Thornton until being moved over to Falkland Yard Ayr in August, starting its journey south to Leicester on 14 Sep and arrived in the scrapman's yard on the 30th, disappearing from view in October. 12Apr87. 27053 had not been withdrawn either but was stored out of the way. It was eventually sold to Vic and his henchmen disposed of this lovely machine in their Leicester lair two years later after a spell on the famous pyramid. 12Apr87. 26042 although trapped in amongst the stored engines escaped and lasted until October 1992 when it was finally withdrawn. Was to be sold to The Weardale Railway but it fell through and this engine was disposed of by MC Metals in June 1995. 12Apr87. 27059 the great escapee. Made it into preservation, at the time of writting on The Severn Valley Railway as D5410. 12Apr87. 27051 again. 12Apr87. A general view of the yard. 24May87. A return visit was made on this date, but not in such nice weather as April. This was the working locos, in order, 27025, 20219/201, 27024, and then all facing the same way are 20218/222/225/212. 24May87. The unusual sight of four Class 20's all facing the same way in a line, 20212/225/222/218. 24May87. 25046 withdrawn in Feb 81 at Haymarket, it was moved out of the way to Millerhill in June that year for 4 months before being moved onto Mossend Yard and Polmadie in preperation of a tow to that little railway town in Wiltshire that had the job of storing and disposing of surplus locomotives in the 1980's. It was thought unwise or unsafe for a move all the way south to Wiltshire so 25046 was moved out of the way again, this time to Shawfield sidings where it resided until being sold to Vic Berry in late April 87. Moved to Thornton for disposal but then moved back west to Mossend on 10 June to start its journey to oblivion in Leicester disappearing into the great abyss never to be seen again in July 87. 24May87. 25160 another long time resident of Shawfield Sidings this was another loco that made the long journey south to Leicester for disposal.As a teenage train spotter visiting Toton on 28th November 1964 little did I think that I would witness the dimise of this engine, then only 18 days in traffic, less than 23 years later, after all the steam engines that these machines had been built to replace had lasted over half a century. 24May87. 25160/046, 26013, 25028/318, 27016 line up waiting for Vic Berry to decide the next move. 24May87. The remains of 08726. I have this down , as D3894, as being on Crewe South shed ex works in April 1960 along with '95 and '96 while under construction in the works were D3897-3904. What puzzles me is that it was not accepted into traffic and allocated to Parkhead (65C) until July that year. A Scottish engine all its days it came to grief suffering from collision damage and was sold to Vic Berry for disposal.

Wednesday 2 March 1988: Pictorial record of a train journey from Prestwick to Yeovilton and return to Glasgow undertaken in March 1988.

The photographs started at Oxford. Here 47523 waits to restart the 1O01 06:45 Wolverhampton-Poole service. Met Cammell Class 101 DMU unit 830 runs north out of the station ecs to the carriage sidings ready to take up its next working. The water tower from the old steam shed can be seen just above the rear cab. 47270 appeared on what I think was a Washwood Heath-Oxford Hinksey Yard Speedlink service. 47434 runs towards Oxford station passed the old graveyard with 1M88 06:25 Poole-Manchester. 47270 returns north light engine after depositing its Speedlink service. A rather cluttered shot deplicting 47533 with the ecs from 1F12 08:20 Paddington-Oxford. 47621 ran north towards the station light engine. 47533 returned to the capital with 1F27 09:55 Oxford-Paddington seen here just after departing Oxford station. 1M20 09:17 Paddington-Birmingham New Street was at the time a good bet for 50 haulage, 2nd March 1988 was one of the days that it produced. 50009 has charge of the train switching from the mainline onto the platform line. First sighting of the day of a Class 56 was 56039 working a block train of ARC empties, no doubt back towards the Mendips. Shortly afterwards the second Class 56 of the day appeared in the shape of 56044 with a loaded rake of ARC PGA's. The 1F29 10:55 Oxford-Paddington was powered by 50032 waiting here at the up platform for the off. 47621 then reappeared but this time at the head of the Oxford-Old Oak Common empty NPCCS, no doubt from the mornings newspaper train. 43138 was the rear power car on the days Paddington-Great Malven, my first picture of a complete set, including power cars, of the then new Executive Livery. On now to Reading where 47575 waits to depart to the west with 1O03 08:08 Manchester-Bournemouth. 50018 Resolution waits time at Reading with 1F20 12:17 Paddington-Oxford. Resplendent in its freshly applied Post Office Red livery DPU 55992 sits at the 'parcels' platform waiting to be loaded for its return towards London. By now reallocated to Bristol Bath Road 47476 stills shows its former affiliation to Gateshead with the depot crest transfer still above the number. Still yet to be awarded the name 'Night Mail' in over three years time 47476 restarts 1F33 13:00 Oxford-Paddington away from its Reading station stop. On now to Basingstoke and farewell to the sun that had been shining on me from dawn. Also disappointing was the lack of a Class 50 on 1O18 12:18 Exeter St. David's-Waterloo, 47475 recently transfered to the line had charge. The Salisbury trains could be relied upon for some Southern Region locos, 33029 takes 1L09 14:10 Waterloo-Salisbury towards its booked Basingstoke station stop. Also an almost 100% guarentined Southern Region loco was the Bournemouth services which were in the hands of ED's while the power cars of the 4-REP's were reconditioned. 73107 sparks its way out of Basingstoke with 1B26 14:00 Bournemouth-Waterloo. 1O05 07:45 Newcastle-Poole twists its way from the Reading line with 47566 in charge. What can best be described as a bonus for me so far from home was this ecs working from East Ham to Eastleigh Works of a 4 car Eastern Region Class 307 EMU for overhaul, 73106 providing the tow. Now onto Salisbury where the crew change from 50001 which was working 1V15 15:10 Waterloo-Exeter St. David's. 33029 waits to depart with 1L12 17:25 Salisbury-Waterloo. The following day, 3rd March, with my business completed at RNAS Yeovilton, I took the train back north from the Junction station. My train had already got the road when 50037 entered the station with 1V15 15:10 Waterloo-Exeter St. David's. The intention was for some night photography at Reading. 50044 was the first 'victim' of this plan as it sits at the head of an up parcels working. The cold however was to much to bear and the kindly station staff allowed me to sleep by the fire in the rest room until the next morning. It was arranged, by the kind station staff, for me to get a lift to Tilehurst in an ecs working so I could take up my position by the River Thames for some early morning pictures. This shot of 50025 on 1F01 06:28 Oxford-Paddington was the only one I amnaged before the batteries in the camera packed in! On fitting the spare batteries I discovered they too were flat! A walk back to Reading and the wait for the shops to open resulted in the sun being to far round for the shots that I wanted by the time I had regained my position! Here a two car Met Cammell DMU can just be made out. 43012 was the power car in shot with this last vain attempt of a shot from the riverbank. Back to Tilehurst proper and 1M20 09:17 Paddington-Birmingham New Street failed to produce the expected 'Hoover'. 47513 had charge of the train today. Next along however was a nice surprise in 37214 with a short train of HEA's no doubt destined for Didcot which at the time was the 'hub' of the wagon load coal workings. It would be wrong to have a series of pictures from this area without the then mandatory Class 117 DMU. The Platelayer acknowledges the warning 'toot' from the driver of 47620 with a wave as 1F27 09:55 Oxford-Paddington hurries along the up slow. Tilehurst station with one of the numerous Pressed Steel Class 117 DMU's. 37214 runs back east light engine after depositing its HEA's at Didcot. On now to Didcot, as 58022 swings round to enter the Power Station with a loaded train from perhaps the Nottinghamshire coalfield. Gone now are the 58's and also the coalfield! 58019 appears from the confines of the Power Station with a rake of HAA empties. Sneaking up siliently behind me was 47079 with the emprty Avan CC refuse train. A quickly composed picture managed, more by luck than judgement, to include both the 47 and 58019. 47528 storms passed with the empty NPCCS from Milford Haven that had taken the newspapers that morning to the far west of Wales. 56036 had charge of a rake of ARC PGA's returning west . 58022 after discharging its Nottinghamshire coal gets ready for its return north. Next stop Radley where 47625 makes a fine sight on an up working. The Radley station footbridge provides a nice prop cum frame for 50026 and its 1F37 16:00 Oxford-Paddington srvice. Shortly after the passage of the former D426 came its immediate predcessor D425, long since renumbered to 50025, with the 1F26 15:17 Paddington-Oxford. Bubble car 55023, also known as unit L123, on an up working. Then came the short hop back to Oxford to start the long journey back north proper. The driver of the Class 155 sprinter unit jumped out of his cab at the most inopportune moment as a carefully composed shot with 58036 was being taken, such is life! 58004 heads north with it empty train. The Dover-Bescot Sppedlink service was in the hands of 47060 as it passes through the station on the down through road.................... ..............only to be stopped to allow 50025 to bring its stock for 1F39 16:55 Oxford-Paddington accross its bows from the carriage sidings.

08:15 Barrow to Preston service at Arnside with 37418 in charge. 37049 leads the 6A49 Corkhill No. 1 to West Thurock tanks at Silverdale. 37418 returns from Preston near Silverdale. 37706 with its train near Carnforth. Hest Bank is the location as 37706 heads back south. 37418 again appeared at Silverdale watched by a pair of Twitchers who had been at the near by hide. 60095 also had a turn on the specials, seen here near Silverdale. The highlight must have been the pair of choppers, 059 and 168 which give the bashers a rare treat.

No opera here, just the music of 37209 Phantom on the climb to the summit with 7S53 Hardendale-Ravenscraig lime. 1M02 09:12 Waverley-Birmingham Int descends the south bank with a RfD 90 in charge. 37040 at the helm of the diverted Fort William-Blyth empty alumina tanks near Harthope. 87028 appraoches Harthope with 1M95 10:32 Glasgow-Birmingham Most likely having been held to allow 1M95 to pass 90050 makes for Harthope with the SO 6M27 Larbert-Oakleigh empty Soda Ash tanks. 6M27 was quickly follow by an UID 47 on the diverted 6E74 Grangemouth-Haverton Hill nasty tanks. 90002 climbs the south face of the incline with 1S47 07:25 Euston-Glasgow Following 1S47 was 6S49 Washwood Heath- Mossend with 37116 growling away against the grade. 86425 in a fresh coat of Parcels sector paint provides the motive power for 1V59 09:00 Aberdeen-Plymouth. 86219 assualts the bank with 1S52 05:59 Paddington-Glasgow. 87002 was a complete surprise on a rake of NPCCS southbound between Abington and Crawford. 86243 passing in the start of a blizzard was the signal to get home, seen between Crawford and Abington as it makes its way north.

This was one of the best open days that I have ever attended the variety of classes and liveries was tremendous and with the space available in the marshalling yard the layout of the exhibits was something other locations could only dream of. 90018 in RES livery 47705 in Waterman Railways livery 82008 in BR Blue Era 83012 in Inter-City livery applied during its spell as an ECS loco at Euston. 84009 in departmental colours E3003 in orginal Electric Blue from the 1960's 87101 deplicting the BR Blue Era 85101 again in BR Blue 47286 shows the livery of RfD 90126 again in Rfd livery 47784 in the striking RES livery 90128 one of the three Continential liveried 90's 90129 another of the Continential 90's All three of the Continentials 90130 the third of the Continential 90@s 47401 (the former D1500) in the much loved Large Logo 55015 Tulyar represented the King of Diesels, even had the normal oil leaks down the bodyside D1048 Western Lady back in its town of birth 40135 with the split nose boxes looking very smart in its 1960's green albeit with a full yellow end 37201 shows off its newly acquired nameplate of St. Margaret and the wonderfully effective Transrail Dutch livery 92036 of the 'Chunnel' fleet 47973 in the Mainline livery even though the property of RTC Derby 47348 in a very smart RfD livery. An Open Day regular this locomotive, receiving its name at Coalville's open day 1987. 37517 one of three Loadhaul liveried locos on show 60059 alongside 37519 giving a comparison in orange end tapers 56107 joins the other two to complete the Load Haul trio. 58050 one of the pair of Mainline Blue engines on show 45041 provided the subject for the re-railing demonstrations 20075 and 20128 in the BRT livery, one of a number of liveries that class wore that day Another livery for the Class 20's to show off was Red Stripe Railfreight, 20118 being the bearer Skinhead 31105 Bescot TMD shows off the Trainsrail livery 31112 in a resplendant Transrail Dutch colour scheme BR Sulzer Type 2 (Class 25) D5222 looks to have had a bodywork rubdown in preparation for a new topcoat Hymek D7076 in true 1960's green with the small warning panel The second of the two Mainline Blue locos was 37219 BTH Type 1 D8233 looks the part complete with its 30A Stratford cast iron shed plate 20072 in a real work stained, weather beaten BR Blue livery The second Western was D1041 Western Prince in the atractive Maroon but full yellow ends, another Crewe Works product 50, 45, 47's and 40 line up 50007 in the lined green livery The line up from the other end illustrating the care taken in positioning the exhibits D1102 and D1842 supposedly in the same livery have different interpritations of shades of green applied 86623 in RfD livery, this image was taken as it was the penultimate Class 86 that I needed a photograph of. Nearly ten years later and sister 627 has still to present itself before the lens! Second nose type of the Class 40's on show is modelled by former Neville Hill resident 40145 The disc nose of the class iis provided by 212 Rail Blue liveried 50044 looks very smart But Large Logo blue 50021 looks even better 47146 again in the most atractive RfD livery.
